Why your signup count matters
Contents

A headline tells a visitor what you're building. A signup count tells them other people already believe it's worth waiting for. One is a claim, the other is evidence, and evidence is what actually moves someone from reading to signing up.

Why the number works

People copy people

This isn't a marketing trick, it's just how humans decide under uncertainty. When you don't have enough information to judge something yourself, you borrow other people's judgment instead. A waitlist count is the simplest version of that: if 800 people already decided this was worth their email address, a new visitor doesn't have to make that call entirely alone.

It answers the question copy can't

No amount of headline writing fully answers "is this actually going to happen, and will it be worth it." A growing number does, quietly, in the background, without you having to argue for it.

Making a small number still work for you

Early is not the same as unproven

A waitlist with 40 signups looks very different depending on how it's framed. "40 people" on its own can read as small. "40 people in the first week" reads as momentum. Context turns the same number from a weakness into a signal that something's moving.

Give people a reason to add to it themselves

The fastest way to turn a small number into a bigger one isn't a better headline, it's giving the people already on the list a reason to bring others. A referral reward tied to a visible threshold (see our five reward ideas) does this directly: every share is a bet on your own number going up, made by someone other than you.

Resist the urge to inflate it

It's tempting to round up or pad a number that feels too small to show. Don't. The entire value of a signup count is that it's real. The moment a visitor suspects it isn't, you've lost the one thing that made it persuasive in the first place, and you can't get that trust back with the same number next time.

Watch your number grow

Every Springuplist waitlist page shows a live signup count by default, no setup required, so the social proof is working from the first visitor onward.

A signup count isn't a vanity metric on a waitlist page. It's often the single line doing the most persuading, which is exactly why it's worth thinking about deliberately instead of leaving it to chance.
